How to stop Meta from using your Meta AI chats, where you can
Meta trains its AI on Meta AI chats and uses them to target ads. How to object in the EU and UK, how to delete chats, and where there is no opt-out.
What you type to Meta AI is used two ways: to train Meta’s AI, and to pick the ads and posts you see. People in the EU and UK can object to the training. In the US, there is no opt-out from either. Anyone can delete their chats.
What Meta says it does with your chats
- Training. “Meta uses your interactions with AIs to improve AI at Meta,” its help center says. Meta’s training-data page lists “people’s interactions with AI at Meta features” next to public Facebook and Instagram posts.
- Ads and feeds. Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses text and voice chats with its AI features to personalize content and ads on its apps. Its announcement says the change is rolling out “in most regions” and does not list them. Our story on the change cites Proton, which reported the exceptions are the EU, the UK and South Korea.
- Topics left out of ads. Meta says it does not use chats about religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership to show ads.
- WhatsApp. Meta says Meta AI chats on WhatsApp are used to personalize your other Meta accounts only if your WhatsApp account has been added to its Accounts Center.
- Other companies. When Meta AI can’t answer a question, Meta says it shares your messages and general information, like your region, “with select partners.”
- Messages with people. Meta says it does not train on private messages with friends and family, “unless you or someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with our AIs.”
In the EU and UK: object
People in the EU and UK can ask Meta to stop. Meta’s help center ties this right to European data protection law, “if you’re in the EU or the UK.”
- Go to Meta’s privacy rights requests page.
- Select the product you want to object about.
- Select How can I object to the use of my information.
- Follow the instructions. Meta may ask which use you object to and why.
Meta says it will tell you the outcome, and give its reason if it says no.
What each objection covers, by Meta’s own account:
- EU. Meta’s April 2025 announcement says “People’s interactions with Meta AI – like questions and queries – will also be used to train and improve our models.” It says people can object “at any time,” and that it honors objections it has already received.
- UK. Meta’s September 2024 announcement covers public posts, comments, photos and captions from adults. It does not mention Meta AI chats. It says UK users can reach the objection form “at any time.”
In the US: no opt-out
Meta’s pages offer no setting or form for people in the US to stop it from training on their Meta AI chats. Its ads announcement offers no opt-out either. It points to “Ads Preferences and other feed controls” to “adjust the content and ads you see.” Those change what you see. They do not stop Meta from using the chats.
The only way to keep a chat out is not to have it. You can also delete the chats you have.
Delete your Meta AI chats
In the Meta AI app:
- Tap Menu in the top left.
- Tap Settings in the bottom left.
- Under App settings, tap Data & privacy.
- Tap Manage your information.
- Tap Delete all chats and media, then tap Delete all.
Your chats, prompts and media then no longer appear in the History or Media sections of the Meta AI and Vibes apps. This does not remove public vibes, the AI videos you posted.
In Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp, Meta says “you can delete your AI messages by typing ‘/reset-ai’ in a conversation”:
- Open your chat with Meta AI.
- Type /reset-ai and send it.
What deleting does not do
Meta’s pages do not say how long Meta keeps Meta AI chats. They do not say whether deleting a chat takes it back out of AI training that already used it, or out of the ad profile already built from it.
